Top 10 Colorful Lakes of World
1. Lake Pukaki
In New Zealand’s Lake Pukaki, the color “glacier blue” means something completely different. The colorful lake was made when the ice melted away many years ago. Today, that glacier feed makes glacier flour, which is finely ground rock that gives the lake its unique icy blue color. The second biggest alpine lake in New Zealand’s South Island is Lake Pukaki, which is in the Mackenzie Basin.
2. Band-e Amir
Band-e Amir is a group of six clear blue lakes in the Hindu Kush Mountains in the middle of Afghanistan. The first national park in Afghanistan was made out of them in 2008. Water that was rich in minerals seeped out of cracks and faults in the rock and made the beautiful lakes. The vivid and changing colors of the lakes’ water are also caused by the high mineral content of the lakes.
3. Kelimutu
Three crater lakes of different colors can be found at the top of Kelimutu Volcano. Most of the time, Tiwu Ata Mbupu is blue, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai is green, and Tiwu Ata Polo is a pinkish color. Flaws in the earth’s rock called fumaroles are thought to be the source of the unusual color mix. People love to visit the beautiful lakes, and every year a lot of scientists come to study them. A lot of people are interested in and discuss the fact that the three lakes are all different colors even though they are all on the same volcano crest.
4. Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake in Banff National Park is known for its beautiful blue water, which comes from glaciers that feed it. Light bends around the glacier flour, giving it its color. Moraine Lake is in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, which is surrounded by the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains. Around Moraine Lake, there are a number of hiking tracks. Make sure you check the trail conditions before you go, because grizzly bears can sometimes make them out of bounds.
5. Laguna Verde
This salty lake is called Laguna Verde, and it is in the southwest of Bolivia’s high hills. The water in the Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon) is a beautiful shade of green. Those of you who speak Spanish will already know this. At the base of the Licancabur Volcano, the beautiful green color comes from copper reserves in the rock. The colorful lake is also known for the hot springs and beautiful scenery around it.
6. Laguna Colorada
The Laguna Colorada is in Bolivia, not far from the border with Chile. The red color of the water comes from red sediments and plants that have pigments. The Laguna Colorada has more than just red water. It also has many kinds of birds and a number of white borax islands. Borax islands are made when seasonal lakes, like the Laguna Colorada, dry out over and over again.
7. Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru is one of the best things to see in Kenya. It is a very small lake in the rift valley. Many lesser flamingos come to the lake to feed on its algae, sometimes more than a million at once. Flamingos actually paint the shores pink, and they are often called the most amazing birds to watch. Sadly, the number of flamingos has been going down over the past few years because of pollution and damage to the environment.
8. Havasu Falls
People from the Havasupai tribe live in the small town of Supai. The Havasu Canyon is part of the Grand Canyon. To get to the town, you have to take a helicopter or walk 13 km (8 miles) on a dusty horse trail from a parking lot on top of Hualapai Hill.
People mostly go to see the Havasupai (whose name means “people of the blue-green water”) because of the beautiful falls and water. Havasu Falls is the most beautiful of these. The water is a beautiful color because carbonate minerals settle to the bottom and make it white. The water also reflects the blue sky and the green and brown mossy rocks around it.
9. Plitvice Lakes
The Plitvice Lakes are sixteen lakes near the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are one of the most popular vacation spots in Croatia. People love the lakes because of their unique colors, which include azure, green, blue, and gray. The lakes always have different colors because it depends on how the sun is shining on them and how many rocks, deposits, or living things are in each one.
10. Jiuzhaigou
There are many blue, green, and turquoise lakes in China’s Jiuzhaigou Valley. The people who live there call these bodies of water “Haizi,” which in Chinese means “son of the sea.” Glaciers carved out many of the beautiful lakes, and today, many streams empty into these clean waters. Many times, people can see all the way to the bottom of the lakes because the water is so clear and has such beautiful colors.
